A Letter From sag harbor village trustee, aidan corish

Dear Friends,

Havens Beach is not just a picturesque locale; it’s a critical component of our local ecosystem. To ensure its sustained well-being, we are launching a comprehensive study of the watershed and the environment surrounding Havens Beach. This study will delve into water quality, habitat diversity, and overall environmental resilience. In July 2022 The Village of Sag Harbor successfully applied for a grant from New York State LWRP Program to partially fund a comprehensive study of Havens Beach and the associated watershed area.

The purpose of this study is threefold:

  1. Prepare a watershed analysis for Havens Beach to provide the basis for identification of drainage improvements within the upper watershed as well as at the park.

  2. Provide initial recommendations for balancing community and public works uses at Havens Beach, including but not limited to bathing beach, dog park, emergency services landing area, stormwater treatment, and other uses that may be identified by the community through a public engagement process.

  3. The final document will be used as the cornerstone for future grant applications to NYS, Suffolk County, Southampton and East Hampton CPF funds and the Peconic Estuary Partnership to implement the study’s recommendations.

The total amount required for this study is $88, 228 of which the NYS MWRP Program has agreed to fund $66,171 (75%), leaving a shortfall of $22,075. This was funded by a generous donation of $2,500 from the Sag Harbor Partnership and the balance of $19,572 was funded by the Village of Sag Harbor.

As we dive into the project, we have no doubt that unforeseen opportunities and challenges will arise. To ensure the utmost success and impact of this study, we anticipate the need for additional financial support. We are reaching out to valued supporters like you to help us secure an additional $30,000. The success of this initiative hinges on community support, and we are inviting you to join us in this endeavor.

By contributing to our fundraising campaign, you directly support the research, data collection, and analysis required for a thorough understanding of the challenges facing Havens Beach.

Your donation, no matter the size, will serve as an investment in the preservation of this national treasure. We believe that, together, we can make a significant positive impact on the environmental well-being of Havens Beach. Your support is instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future for this vital ecosystem.

Thank you.
